Our Story

Wraparound porch freshly painted

Anchor & Brush was founded in 2007 by James Caldwell, a third-generation painter who grew up stripping lead paint off Thames Street colonials with his father.

After apprenticing with a restoration firm in Boston, he returned to Newport with a conviction that residential painting didn't have to mean corner-cutting and thin coats.

The company started with a van, a set of Purdy brushes, and a reputation for prep work that bordered on obsessive. Word spread along Bellevue Avenue and into the historic neighborhoods.

Today the crew is eighteen — painters, prep specialists, and a dedicated color consultant — and the work stretches from Watch Hill to Bristol.

Still family-run. Still three coats minimum. Still no tape on the ceiling line.

How We Work

Our Standards

Preparation Is Everything

We spend more time preparing surfaces than most companies spend painting them. It’s the only way to guarantee a finish that lasts.

Three Coats, No Exceptions

Primer and two finish coats on every surface. Cutting corners creates callbacks. We’d rather do it right.

We Cut In By Hand

Our painters cut clean ceiling lines, trim lines, and glass lines by hand. No tape. That’s the Anchor & Brush standard.

Products Matter

We specify Benjamin Moore’s premium product lines because they cover better, last longer, and look better than anything else on the market.

The Crew

Eighteen Painters.
Three Generations
of Experience.
One Standard.

Every member of our crew trains in both modern and historic painting techniques. We specialize because the homes we work on demand it.

From prep specialists who understand century-old substrates to finish painters who cut glass lines freehand — this is a team built on precision and pride.
